About Me

Marcie Writes

I’m a passionate Chicago enthusiast and lifelong lover of roller skating with a deep curiosity for the stories that shape our city’s culture. What began as a simple visit to a local rink in 2009 blossomed into a 16-year research journey investigating the roots of roller skating in Chicago — from its earliest rinks in the 1880s right through to the modern day. Along the way, I’ve spent countless hours combing through library archives, interviewing former skaters and rink owners, collecting photos and personal memories, and piecing together a vibrant historical tapestry most people don’t even know exists.

This devotion has inspired me to write Roll Through Chicago’s Roller Skating History, a celebration of one of Chicago’s most enduring and beloved pastimes. My hope with this book is to preserve and share the voices, places, and moments that have kept Chicago rolling for nearly a century and a half. Whether you’re a roller skate aficionado, a fan of Chicago history, or simply love discovering how everyday culture has shaped a city, this book invites you to glide through the stories that have helped define our skating community.
